More Mindful Focus

Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now without wishing it were different. Enjoying the pleasant without holding on when it changes (which it will) and being with the unpleasant without fearing it will always be this way (which it won’t). ~James Baraz

This quote is probably one of the best I have heard about mindfulness.

Being mindful and paying attention is a life changing skill when practiced. Every day, every moment gives us the opportunity to practice this skill.

As a society, we are distracted by so many things competing for our attention. It has been said that most people are distracted 2 ½ – 3 hours per day on things and activities that don’t really matter much. So much precious time is wasted and not invested on things that are important to you. So, today, I want to encourage you to start being mindful about where you invest your energy, your time and your focus.

Here are some ways to practice mindfulness:

  1. Be all in where you are. Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. If we are having dinner with family, but our mind is on work, or we are on the phone, we are not FULLY present. Slow down, take a few deep breathes in, and pay attention. You will find more enjoyment and energy when you practice this. And time actually slows down!
  2. Always do one thing at a time. I realize so many of us multi task throughout the day. However, when we choose to do one thing at a time, we will find ourselves feeling more productive, energized, focused and less scattered.
  3. Meditate on an Empowering Thought. When you are feeling overwhelmed, impatient or tense. PAUSE AND BREATHE. Set a timer for 3 minutes, take a few deep breathes in and repeat “Let go.” Try to make your exhale a little longer than your inhale. The benefits of this peaceful moment are spectacular. Here is the key…Inner ease and peace on the inside gives us the strength, courage, energy and focus to deal with things on the outside.

So, remember, we have only one day at a time to live! Live this day mindfully and present, and choose well!
